September 12, 1683. The Ottoman army had Vienna surrounded, and the city was close to falling. Late in the day, King John III Sobieski of Poland led his winged hussars down the hills in what is often called the largest cavalry charge in history. The siege broke, and Vienna was saved.

For more than a century the winged hussars were among the most feared cavalry in Europe, famous for the feathered wings on their backs and for charges that broke armies many times their size.
